buying good quality seeds
Starting early in the season, 1 week before the frost deadline. I don’t know why, maybe the cold slows down the inital growing process making it more stable. It usually works for me.
It’s all in the soil, and not letting the deer eat the tops.
Every year I put in 10 tomatoe plants, usually Beefsteaks, and I end up getting over 50 quarts of home canned tomatoes. I mix my soil with mushroom manure, you can get it at any nursery, mix half and half with existing soil. Also make sure to use “Miracle Grow For Tomatoes” you wouldn’t believe how much this helps. I use it once a week and get great results. I hope this helps Good Luck!!!!
your fertilizer. that stuff is what’s going to give them a boost. also, get them to grow around some stakes. its good 4 support.
All of the above AND! when you plant them, put about two thirds of the plant in the ground, it makes them a lot more hardy, I think that’s the right word.
To grow the largest fruit possible, then it is good to choose a giant type. Some varieties are larger than others and some have more flavor than others.
so choosing the variety makes a big difference.
plus:
-dig the holes really big and use some compost or manure (about 1/3 compost or such)
-use a big cage that can support the plant and that you can reach through and pick the tomatoes out of
-tomatoes should get lots of food but when it is time to make tomatoes, then don’t give the plants any more nitrogen, otherwise the leaves will be lots but the fruits will be few.
-tomatoes could use a little extra calcium if the ends of their fruits get rotten (blossom end rot)
-picking off some of the flowers or fruit will help the ones that you leave on there to become especially big.
-ripening the tomatoes ‘on the vine’ helps the flavor to be better; tomatoes need warm nights to ripen on the vine and also red mulch helps (but bugs can hide under plastic mulch so watch out)
use trans plants. dont start from seed. if you smoke, wash hands before touching plants. tomatoes catch nicotine mosaic virus. remove several bottom leaves from seedlings and bury the plant up to the level you took the leaves from this will create more roots. use a fish emulsion fertilizer, and , no kidding, put a piece of red colored plastic on ground at base of plant.[available at garden center]. for a supersized tomatoe. remove all white buds except one on each plant. dont do it to all your plants, just a couple or you’ll cut down on quanty of tomatoes.. cut off sucker leaves. they just sap plants. use big boy, beef steak better boy and or early girl varieties. good luck
there is no secret in growing tomatoes, just little tips and tricks. first get your seed from a good tomatoe. To grow the largest fruit possible, then it is good to choose a giant type. Make sure the dirt is miost. Use a cage for support. picking off some of the fruit will help others to become especially big.
All good answers below and yes it is just little tips so here is one more. Put about 1/4 cup of powdered mile in each hole when you plant. That will be the end of blossom end rot which is caused by a calcium deficiency.
